Chapter 12

My next stop was to see Everett’s widow. Frida Marshall lived only a few blocks away from the Remple family, in a Craftsman that was probably built at the same time as the one where Sally now lived. Frida’s was painted far more neutrally, however, in navy blue with white trim that gave it a real classic look.

I knocked at the front door, and a moment later, Frida replied. She looked older than the last time I’d seen her, and as soon as she spotted me, she took me into a huge bear hug.

“Thank you for what you wrote about Everett in the paper,” she said. “I’ve been meaning to get in touch, but things have been so busy.”

“I completely understand, and you’re welcome. Your husband sounded like a wonderful man, and I’m sorry I never got to meet him.”

“But come in, come in. What can I help you with?”

Frida ushered me into the home, which was neat and tidy and smelled of lavender. Frida was in her mid-sixties, with white hair in a pixie cut. She stood about five-six and was quite thin, with long, delicate fingers.

“I was hoping you might be able to help me find a list of Everett’s clients,” I explained. “I know he was still seeing a few people.”

Frida tilted her head to the side. “Why would you possibly need those?”

“I’m looking into Everett’s death, and I think there’s more than meets the eye,” I admitted. “I was hoping that by getting a look at who he was working for, I might be able to get a better idea as to what happened to him.”

Frida’s spine stiffened. “I can tell you what happened to him. Everett fell while running. I don’t know what you could possibly be insinuating.”

It didn’t take a genius to know Frida wasn’t going to be open to the idea that someone had killed her husband. “It’s probably nothing,” I said quickly. “I’m just tying up some loose ends, that’s all.”

Frida narrowed her eyes at me. “I’ll get the files for you, but only because you did such a good job with your article before.”

“Thank you. I promise, everything I’m doing is to do right by your husband.”

“Stay here. I’ll come back with a list of the people who he worked for. I’m not giving you the files themselves.”

“Of course. I completely understand.”

I was on tenterhooks while Frida went deeper into the house, shifting my weight nervously from leg to leg. After all, Frida didn’t seem to want to give me the information, and I really hoped she wasn’t about to change her mind in the middle of it.

But she returned a moment later with a list. “These were Everett’s clients. I don’t know what you need this list for, but I ask you to please let my husband rest in peace. I’ve just had to bury him. I’m trying to learn how to live without the man I spent my entire adult life with. I just… I just want to move on.
